Volume Converter: A Practical Guide

Use Volume Converter to convert litres, millilitres, cubic metres, US gallons and US cups. The US labels matter: Imperial gallons and some cooking-cup conventions have different sizes. Choose the definition used by your source.

How to Use Volume Converter

  1. Enter Value in the source unit.
  2. Choose From and To carefully.
  3. Select Convert.
  4. Read the result with its unit and round only as appropriate for the task.

Volume Definitions

One litre equals 1000 millilitres, and one cubic metre equals 1000 litres. This implementation uses a US gallon of 3.785411784 litres and a US customary cup of 0.2365882365 litres.

A recipe using a 250 mL metric cup will not match the US cup option. Volume-to-mass conversion also needs density; the tool cannot infer grams from cups of an unspecified ingredient.

Worked Example

Two US gallons equal 7.570823568 litres before display rounding. Four US cups equal approximately 0.946353 litres.

A container holding 0.5 cubic metres has a capacity of 500 litres.

Convert mass separately: use the Weight Converter.

Convert dimensions used in volume calculations: use the Length Converter.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Check US versus Imperial units.
  • Do not assume every recipe cup has the same size.
  • Do not convert to mass without density.
  • Round appropriately for the measuring vessel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the gallon Imperial?

No. The form explicitly uses a US gallon.

Can I convert cups to grams?

Not without ingredient density and measurement conditions.

Why is the displayed answer rounded?

The interface uses finite display precision; retain the conversion definition when higher precision is needed.
