Base64 Encoder: A Practical Guide

Use Base64 Encoder to represent UTF-8 text using the standard Base64 alphabet. It is a transport encoding, not encryption. Anyone with the encoded string can decode it using a compatible decoder.

How to Use Base64 Encoder

  1. Paste the text.
  2. Select Process.
  3. Copy the encoded result.
  4. Decode a test copy to verify the intended text.

Base64 Represents Bytes

The tool converts text to UTF-8 bytes, then Base64-encodes those bytes. The encoded output can contain letters, digits, plus, slash and equals padding.

Base64 usually increases the size compared with the original bytes. This text input is not a general binary-file uploader, and it does not automatically produce URL-safe Base64.

Worked Example

Hello encodes as SGVsbG8=. The equals sign is padding, not an error.

Non-ASCII text is encoded from its UTF-8 bytes, so its Base64 length is not determined only by the number of visible characters.

Verify the reverse transformation: use the Base64 Decoder.

Encode a URL component instead: use the URL Encoder.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Do not use encoding as security.
  • Check standard versus URL-safe alphabet.
  • Avoid sharing encoded secrets.
  • Do not execute decoded content blindly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this hide a password?

No. Base64 is reversible encoding, not a secrecy mechanism.

Is this Base64url?

The current output uses standard Base64; URL-safe variants have different alphabet rules.

Can I encode an image file?

This page accepts text. Binary file conversion needs an appropriate file-based workflow.
