Fuel Cost Calculator: A Practical Guide

Use the Fuel Cost Calculator to estimate fuel volume and cost from distance, vehicle efficiency and price per litre. The efficiency field expects kilometres per litre. The estimate covers fuel only, not the complete cost of a journey.

How to Use Fuel Cost Calculator

  1. Enter Distance (km), including the return leg if needed.
  2. Enter Fuel efficiency (km/L).
  3. Enter Fuel price per litre in your chosen currency.
  4. Select Calculate fuel cost and review litres and cost.

Distance Divided by Efficiency

Fuel litres = distance ÷ kilometres per litre. Cost = fuel litres × price per litre. A higher km/L value means less fuel is needed for the same distance.

Published vehicle efficiency can differ from a trip involving traffic, hills, luggage or air conditioning. Use an observed average appropriate to the journey, and compare a less-efficient scenario if you need a planning range.

Worked Example

A 360-km journey at 18 km/L needs 20 litres. At 105 per litre, fuel cost is 2100.

If actual efficiency falls to 15 km/L, the journey needs 24 litres and costs 2520. That difference comes from efficiency, not a change in distance.

Convert a distance to kilometres: use the Length Converter.

Convert fuel volume units: use the Volume Converter.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Do not enter litres per 100 km into a km/L field.
  • Do not forget the return distance.
  • Tolls, parking and vehicle wear are excluded.
  • Use the same fuel and price basis as the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert L/100 km?

Divide 100 by the L/100 km figure to obtain km/L. For example, 5 L/100 km equals 20 km/L.

Can I split cost among passengers?

Divide the resulting cost by the number sharing it; the form does not contain a passenger field.

Is the result a live fuel-price quote?

No. It uses the price you enter and does not retrieve current pump prices.
