Merge PDF: A Practical Guide

Use Merge PDF to combine separate PDF files into one document. Arrange the files in reading order before creating the result. Merging is useful for a report with appendices or a submission assembled from several documents; it does not rewrite the original page contents.

How to Use Merge PDF

  1. Choose the PDF files you want to combine.
  2. Inspect the file list and arrange the intended order.
  3. Run Merge PDF.
  4. Download the combined file and check the first page of every section.

Combine Documents in Reading Order

The merged file brings source pages together into one PDF. A page count check is a useful first verification: ordinary merging should produce the sum of the included source page counts.

Bookmarks, interactive forms and existing digital signatures may not retain their original behavior when documents are rebuilt. A merged copy is not proof that a signed original remains valid. Retain the original signed files when their validation matters.

Worked Example

A 2-page covering letter, 8-page report and 3-page appendix should produce 13 pages. Check that page 3 begins the report and page 11 begins the appendix.

If an appendix was selected twice, the output can look complete while containing duplicate pages. Check the file list before processing.

Adjust individual pages: use the Organize PDF.

Remove an unwanted page: use the Remove PDF Pages.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Do not merge confidential pages merely because they share a filename.
  • Check orientation and page sizes after merging.
  • Merging does not necessarily reduce file size.
  • Use clear filenames when several versions are present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I merge scanned PDFs?

Yes, readable scanned pages can be combined as pages. Merging does not make their text searchable; OCR is a separate operation.

Can I change individual page order?

Use Organize PDF or Reorder PDF Pages when the sequence needs more than file-level ordering.

Should I delete the originals?

Keep them until the combined document has been opened and checked, especially for signed or interactive documents.
