VAT Calculator: A Practical Guide
Use the VAT Calculator to add a known VAT percentage to a net amount. The result is the gross amount including the calculated VAT. This form adds VAT; it does not extract VAT from a price that already includes it.
How to Use VAT Calculator
- Enter Net amount before this tax.
- Enter the applicable rate as an ordinary percentage.
- Select the calculation button.
- Check tax and total against the invoice basis.
Add Tax to a Net Amount
Tax = net amount × percentage rate ÷ 100. Gross amount = net amount + tax.
VAT calculations require a defined net price and applicable rate. Exempt, zero-rated and standard-rated supplies can have different treatment. The arithmetic form does not determine a supply category, input-tax entitlement or filing obligation.
Worked Example
For a net amount of 800 and an illustrative 5% rate, tax is 40 and gross total is 840.
For a gross price of 120 including an illustrative 20% VAT, net price is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100 and included VAT is 20. This example illustrates reversal; the form itself adds VAT to a net amount.
Check the tax component alone: use the Percentage Calculator.
Calculate a price reduction where applicable: use the Discount Calculator.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Do not add tax again to a tax-inclusive price.
- Enter 5 for 5%, not 0.05.
- Check the applicable rate with the relevant authority.
- Multiple invoice lines may round differently from one combined total.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the tool choose the rate?
No. You must enter the rate that applies to the transaction.
Can it remove included tax?
No. The current inputs take a net amount. For an inclusive price, the VAT component is gross minus gross divided by one plus the decimal VAT rate.
Does the result establish tax compliance?
No. It is an arithmetic check. Classification, exemptions, filing and invoice requirements need separate verification.
