JSON Formatter: A Practical Guide

Use JSON Formatter to parse JSON and display it with two-space indentation. It helps inspect nested objects and arrays. Formatting validates syntax during parsing, but it does not verify that the data satisfies your application’s schema.

How to Use JSON Formatter

  1. Paste the JSON.
  2. Select Process.
  3. Review the formatted structure.
  4. Save or copy the result only after checking important values.

JSON Format Behavior

The tool uses JSON.parse followed by JSON.stringify with indentation. Comments, trailing commas and single-quoted property names are not accepted JSON syntax.

Parsing and reserializing can change numeric representation and lose precision for integers beyond JavaScript’s safe range. Duplicate object keys can be collapsed. Do not use this workflow for byte-preserving signatures or large integer identifiers without appropriate handling.

Worked Example

The compact input {"name":"Ada","roles":["editor","reader"]} becomes an indented object with a readable array. The semantic structure should still match the intended data.

Check syntax or inspect readable structure: use the JSON Validator.

Choose a compact or readable representation: use the JSON Minifier.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Keep a source copy.
  • Review duplicate keys and large numbers.
  • Do not paste credentials unnecessarily.
  • Check the destination’s schema separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does formatting validate a schema?

No. It checks JSON syntax through parsing, not required fields or business rules.

Can it preserve huge integer IDs exactly?

Not reliably as ordinary JavaScript numbers. Use an appropriate string or lossless-number workflow.

Are comments accepted?

Standard JSON does not include comments.
