Unix Timestamp Converter: A Practical Guide

Use Unix Timestamp Converter to convert seconds since the Unix epoch into ISO and local date-time displays, or convert a selected local date-time into Unix seconds. Pay attention to units: a common JavaScript timestamp is milliseconds, while this field expects seconds.

How to Use Unix Timestamp Converter

  1. Enter Unix timestamp (seconds), or fill Date/time.
  2. If both are filled, the Date/time value takes precedence in this implementation.
  3. Select Convert.
  4. Read Unix seconds, ISO 8601 and local display together.

UTC Instant and Local Display

Unix seconds identify an instant relative to 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z. ISO output uses UTC, while the local display uses the browser’s local time zone. Different local displays can therefore refer to the same instant.

The date-time picker has no explicit zone selector. Daylight-saving ambiguities and browser-local interpretation need care. This is not a historical timezone-database inspection tool.

Worked Example

Timestamp 0 corresponds to 1970-01-01T00:00:00.000Z. Its local display can fall on another calendar date in some time zones.

A value around thirteen digits may be milliseconds rather than seconds; confirm the source before converting.

Compare date-only intervals: use the Date Difference Calculator.

Compare clock times under its simpler convention: use the Time Duration Calculator.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Check seconds versus milliseconds.
  • Clear the date field when testing a timestamp alone.
  • Record the time zone with local times.
  • Do not infer elapsed duration from clock labels across zone changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are UTC and local times different?

They are two representations of the same instant using different time zones.

Which input wins when both are set?

The current Date/time field takes precedence.

Can timestamps be negative?

A supported negative value represents a time before the epoch.
