Date Difference Calculator: A Practical Guide
Use the Date Difference Calculator to count elapsed calendar days between a start date and an end date. It ignores time of day and counts the interval rather than treating both selected dates as whole included days.
How to Use Date Difference Calculator
- Select Start date.
- Select an End date on or after the start.
- Choose Calculate.
- Read days and the equivalent fractional weeks.
Elapsed Days Versus Inclusive Dates
The calculation subtracts date-only UTC values and divides by 86400000 milliseconds per day. UTC date handling prevents a daylight-saving clock change from turning a calendar day into a 23- or 25-hour error.
The same date gives zero elapsed days. If an application asks for the number of calendar dates including both endpoints, add one to a valid nonnegative interval. Do not silently switch conventions in a deadline calculation.
Worked Example
From 1 March 2026 to 8 March 2026 there are 7 elapsed days, or 1 week.
There are 8 calendar dates if both 1 March and 8 March are included. The tool’s main answer uses the elapsed-day convention.
Count weekdays with both endpoints included: use the Working Days Calculator.
Express age in completed calendar years: use the Age Calculator.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Check the date picker’s day/month display.
- Do not enter the end before the start.
- This is not a working-day or holiday calendar.
- A legal deadline may use a different inclusion rule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are weekends counted?
Yes. Calendar days include Saturdays and Sundays.
Does it count hours between locations?
No. The form uses dates without times or time zones. Use a suitable date-time tool for actual elapsed hours.
Why do I need to add one for some forms?
An inclusive list counts both endpoint dates, while elapsed time counts the gap between them.
