Discount Calculator: A Practical Guide
Use the Discount Calculator to find a price after a percentage reduction and the amount saved. The starting price is the amount before this discount. Additional taxes, delivery fees and other discounts are separate unless you have already incorporated them into that base.
How to Use Discount Calculator
- Enter Original price.
- Enter Discount (%) between 0 and 100.
- Select Calculate.
- Read the reduced price and the savings amount separately.
Savings and Final Price
Savings = original price × discount ÷ 100. Final price = original price − savings.
Successive discounts apply to a changing base. A 20% discount followed by 10% off the remaining price gives a combined 28% reduction, not 30%. Recalculate using the first reduced price when modeling multiple stages.
Worked Example
For an original price of 1500 and 18% off, savings are 270 and the final price is 1230.
A second 10% reduction on 1230 saves another 123. The final 1107 is not the same as subtracting 28% from the original price.

Add a known tax rate to an appropriate base: use the Sales Tax Calculator.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Enter 18 for 18%, not 0.18.
- Do not enter the already-reduced price as the original unless calculating a further discount.
- A 100% reduction gives zero before other charges.
- Confirm the retailer’s order for coupons and taxes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it find the original price from a sale price?
Not directly. For that reverse calculation, divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount rate as a decimal.
Can I enter a cash coupon?
The field expects a percentage. Subtract a fixed coupon separately according to the applicable pricing order.
Is the result the final checkout total?
Only if there are no other charges or adjustments. The tool calculates the specified discount alone.
