EMI Calculator: A Practical Guide
Use the EMI Calculator to estimate a fixed monthly loan instalment from the amount borrowed, annual interest rate and number of months. It also separates projected total payments from interest, making it easier to compare repayment schedules.
How to Use EMI Calculator
- Enter Loan amount using one currency throughout.
- Enter the annual percentage rate, such as 12 for 12%.
- Enter Tenure (months), such as 24 for two years.
- Select Calculate EMI and review the monthly amount, total payment and interest.
Fixed Monthly Repayments
For principal P, monthly rate r and N months, EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^N ÷ ((1 + r)^N − 1). The monthly rate is the annual percentage divided by 1200. At zero interest the calculation becomes P ÷ N.
The model assumes a constant rate, equally spaced monthly payments and no additional fees. It does not include an initial broken-period charge, insurance, prepayments or a future floating-rate reset. A lender schedule can differ because of those details and rounding.
Worked Example
Borrowing 120000 at 12% annually for 12 months gives an estimated EMI of 10661.85. Twelve unrounded payments total approximately 127942.26, including about 7942.26 of interest.
At zero interest the same principal and tenure give 10000 per month. This provides a simple check on which part of the payment represents financing cost.

Checks and Common Mistakes
- Do not enter years in the months field.
- Do not substitute a flat interest rate for a reducing-balance rate.
- A lower EMI achieved by extending tenure can increase total interest.
- Check fees and the contractual repayment schedule before comparing offers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EMI the same as monthly interest?
No. A normal amortizing payment includes both interest and repayment of principal. Their proportions change over the schedule.
Can I model a floating rate?
You can compare separate fixed-rate scenarios, but this tool does not simulate rate changes during one repayment schedule.
Does it include processing fees?
No. Include fees separately when comparing the overall cost of borrowing.
