Random Number Generator: A Practical Guide

Use Random Number Generator to draw a whole number between a minimum and maximum. Both endpoints are included. It is useful for casual sampling, test data and numbered choices, with no guarantee that successive runs will be distinct.

How to Use Random Number Generator

  1. Enter Minimum and Maximum as whole numbers.
  2. Ensure the minimum is not greater than the maximum.
  3. Select Generate number.
  4. Record the result before generating another.

Inclusive Integer Bounds

The configured selection uses an inclusive interval. For minimum 1 and maximum 10, both 1 and 10 are possible. When both bounds are the same, that single value is the only possible result.

Inputs must fit supported safe-integer and random-range limits. This is not a decimal sampler or a no-repeat batch generator. Repeated calls can return the same integer.

Worked Example

For a list numbered 1–25, use bounds 1 and 25. Using 0 as the minimum would introduce an outcome that does not map to a listed item.

If you need every item in random order without repeating an index, shuffle the list instead.

Choose directly from item names: use the Random Picker.

Create a random order: use the List Shuffler.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Use whole-number bounds.
  • Check inclusive endpoints.
  • Do not assume no repeats.
  • Use an audited method for consequential official selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the result equal the maximum?

Yes. The upper bound is included.

Can I request decimals?

The current workflow draws integers only.

How do I avoid repeated selections?

Use a list-shuffling workflow or remove selected items between draws according to a defined rule.
