Text to Slug: A Practical Guide
Use Text to Slug to normalize supplied text into a lowercase, hyphen-separated candidate path segment. It is convenient when drafting a page name or label. It does not publish a URL, check availability or translate the wording.
How to Use Text to Slug
- Paste the title or short text.
- Select Process.
- Review the generated slug.
- Check uniqueness in the destination system before using it.
Readable Normalization
The current normalizer keeps Unicode letters and numbers, replaces other runs with hyphens and removes outer hyphens. It does not automatically transliterate non-Latin scripts.
Use a slug that still describes the content. Changing a published page’s slug can require redirects, updated internal links and canonical changes, so avoid cosmetic changes to established URLs without a migration plan.
Worked Example
New Product: Version 2 becomes new-product-version-2. A title in another supported script can retain its letters rather than becoming an English translation.
Review punctuation removal if it changes the intended distinction between two titles.
Use the title-focused slug form: use the URL Slug Builder.
Inspect a completed address: use the URL Parser.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Check duplicate names.
- Do not assume availability.
- Preserve meaningful wording.
- Plan redirects before changing an existing address.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it remove all non-English letters?
No. Unicode letters and numbers are retained by the current rule.
Will it generate a full URL?
It generates a path-segment candidate, not the domain and complete address.
Can I use the result as a filename?
Review the target system’s filename rules; a URL slug is not a universal filesystem validator.
