Color Picker: A Practical Guide

Use Color Picker to select a color and read its hexadecimal and RGB representations. It is useful when matching a simple web color across styles. The tool is not a screen eyedropper, contrast checker or print color-management system.

How to Use Color Picker

  1. Choose a color in the browser’s color control.
  2. Select Show color.
  3. Read the HEX and RGB values.
  4. Test the color in its actual design context.

HEX and RGB Describe the Same Channels

A six-digit hexadecimal value contains red, green and blue channel values. RGB expresses those channels as decimal values from 0 to 255. The same channel combination can be written in either notation.

Perceived appearance depends on the display, surrounding colors and color handling. A numeric color match does not guarantee print matching or accessible contrast against a particular background.

Worked Example

The color #2563EB corresponds to rgb(37, 99, 235). You can use either representation in an appropriate CSS color property.

For a button, test both the background color and the text contrast rather than choosing a color in isolation.

Apply supported image adjustments: use the Image Editor.

Choose a readable mark in context: use the Watermark Image.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Check contrast separately.
  • Do not assume screen and print appearance match.
  • This form does not provide an alpha channel.
  • Use a screen-eyedropper tool when sampling a screenshot is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sample any pixel on my screen?

This workflow uses a color-selection control, not a guaranteed global eyedropper.

Does it check accessibility?

No. Use a suitable contrast check for foreground and background combinations.

Does it output CMYK?

The current result provides HEX and RGB, not a print CMYK conversion.
