Loan Calculator: A Practical Guide
Use the Loan Calculator to compare fixed-rate borrowing scenarios and see the relationship between monthly payment, tenure and total interest. Enter the borrowing terms rather than your income: this tool estimates repayment, not approval or affordability.
How to Use Loan Calculator
- Enter the amount you plan to borrow.
- Enter a nominal annual interest percentage.
- Enter the total number of monthly payments.
- Choose Calculate EMI and compare both the payment and lifetime interest.
Comparing Cost and Payment Size
The tool uses the standard fixed-payment amortization equation with monthly rate equal to annual rate ÷ 1200. At zero interest, each payment is principal divided by months.
Changing one assumption at a time makes comparisons easier. Extending the repayment period usually reduces the monthly payment for a positive rate, while leaving interest charged over more months. The smallest instalment is therefore not automatically the least expensive loan.
Worked Example
For a loan of 60000 at zero interest, 12 payments are 5000 each, while 24 payments are 2500 each. Both repay 60000.
At a positive rate, the longer schedule generally repays more than the shorter schedule overall. Run both tenures with the same amount and rate, then record total interest alongside the monthly figure.
Focus on one monthly-instalment calculation: use the EMI Calculator.
Calculate a deposit or fee amount: use the Percentage Calculator.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Tenure is measured in whole months.
- Fees, penalties, payment holidays and insurance are outside this model.
- Do not interpret a calculated payment as a lender offer.
- A lender may apply different day-count and rounding conventions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the calculator tell me how much I can borrow?
No. It starts with the principal you enter. An affordability assessment also needs income, expenses, other debts and lender criteria.
Can I include a deposit?
Subtract the deposit from the purchase price first if the remainder is the actual loan principal. Enter only the amount financed.
Why is the result different from a quote?
Compare the rate type, fees, payment dates and tenure. A flat rate, an effective annual rate and a nominal annual rate are not interchangeable.
