UUID Generator: A Practical Guide

Use UUID Generator to create a version-4-style random identifier. UUIDs are useful for labeling records and test objects without coordinating a simple sequential counter. They are identifiers, not automatically suitable passwords or authorization tokens.

How to Use UUID Generator

  1. Select Generate UUID.
  2. Copy the identifier.
  3. Generate a new value for another record.
  4. Enforce uniqueness in the destination database where collisions must be handled.

Version and Variant Bits

The implementation creates a 16-byte random value and sets the version and variant bits for UUID v4 formatting. The usual representation contains 32 hexadecimal digits grouped with hyphens.

Random generation makes collisions very unlikely under a sound random source, but an identifier alone does not prove ownership or permission. Use proper access controls rather than relying on an unguessable-looking record address.

Worked Example

A test dataset can assign one generated UUID to each record and store it as an identifier string. Preserve the whole value, including all hexadecimal digits.

Do not truncate most of the value merely to make it easier to display if uniqueness assumptions depend on the full identifier.

Generate a different text identifier format: use the Random String Generator.

Create a password with the supported settings: use the Password Generator.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Do not use UUID visibility as access control.
  • Keep the complete value.
  • Check database uniqueness constraints.
  • Use a suitable security-token method for authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is each value guaranteed unique?

No absolute guarantee is provided; properly generated random UUID collisions are extremely unlikely, and systems should still handle uniqueness constraints.

Does a UUID encode a creation time?

A v4 UUID is random-style and does not provide a trustworthy creation timestamp.

Can I use it as a password?

Use a dedicated password or token generation workflow suited to that security purpose.
