GST Calculator: A Practical Guide
Use the GST Calculator to add a percentage GST amount to a tax-exclusive base. You supply the applicable rate. The tool does not identify a product’s classification, determine the legal rate or split the amount into CGST, SGST and IGST.
How to Use GST Calculator
- Enter Amount before this tax.
- Enter the applicable rate as an ordinary percentage.
- Select the calculation button.
- Check tax and total against the invoice basis.
Add Tax to a Net Amount
Tax = net amount × percentage rate ÷ 100. Gross amount = net amount + tax.
Use a consistent currency and determine the taxable base before calculation. Exemptions, product rules, place-of-supply rules, discounts and invoice rounding can affect the actual liability. This arithmetic does not establish those rules.
Worked Example
For a net amount of 800 and an illustrative 5% rate, tax is 40 and gross total is 840.
If 840 already includes 5% tax, adding 5% again would be wrong. To reverse that example manually, divide 840 by 1.05 to recover the net 800. The example rate is not a rate recommendation.
Check the tax component alone: use the Percentage Calculator.
Calculate a price reduction where applicable: use the Discount Calculator.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Do not add tax again to a tax-inclusive price.
- Enter 5 for 5%, not 0.05.
- Check the applicable rate with the relevant authority.
- Multiple invoice lines may round differently from one combined total.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the tool choose the rate?
No. You must enter the rate that applies to the transaction.
Can it remove included tax?
The current form adds tax to a base. For included tax, divide the gross by 1 plus the decimal rate, then subtract the net from the gross.
Does the result establish tax compliance?
No. It is an arithmetic check. Classification, exemptions, filing and invoice requirements need separate verification.
