Excel to PDF: A Practical Guide
Use Excel to PDF to render workbook sheets as PDF pages. The current engine reads XLSX workbooks and displays their cell values and supported styling in browser tables. Check the output carefully when the sheet is wide or contains complex formulas and objects.
How to Use Excel to PDF
- Choose an XLSX workbook.
- Select Convert to PDF.
- Wait for each worksheet to render.
- Open the result and inspect columns, totals and page dimensions.
A Visual Workbook Export
Although the file picker may list XLS, the current rendering engine loads XLSX data. Save legacy XLS workbooks as XLSX in a compatible spreadsheet application first.
The converter is not a spreadsheet calculation engine. Formula results depend on values available in the workbook, and print areas, charts, merged cells and other advanced layout features may not reproduce as in Excel. A large sheet can become an unusually large PDF page rather than a carefully paginated report.
Worked Example
For a sales sheet, recalculate and save the workbook first, then check the PDF’s subtotal and grand total against the spreadsheet.
If the last columns are too small to read, simplify the source report or export from the spreadsheet application using a suitable print layout.

- Do not assume formulas are recalculated.

The current engine is designed around XLSX loading. Convert older XLS files properly rather than relying on the picker extension list.
Does the PDF keep working formulas?
No. A visual PDF output is not an interactive spreadsheet.
Why is a sheet difficult to print?
A browser-rendered full sheet may not follow the original print-area and page-break settings.
