Area Converter: A Practical Guide

Use Area Converter to convert square metres, square kilometres, square feet, acres and hectares. Area measures a surface, so its conversion factor is squared relative to the corresponding length factor.

How to Use Area Converter

  1. Enter Value in the source unit.
  2. Choose From and To carefully.
  3. Select Convert.
  4. Read the result with its unit and round only as appropriate for the task.

Squared Units Need Squared Factors

One hectare is 10000 square metres and one square kilometre is 1000000 square metres. One square foot is 0.09290304 square metres.

Do not multiply an area by a linear factor alone. If a length is multiplied by 100 to convert metres to centimetres, the corresponding area factor is 10000. Local land units not shown in the form require a defined regional conversion.

Worked Example

2 hectares equal 20000 square metres, or 0.02 square kilometres.

A floor area of 100 square feet is approximately 9.290304 square metres, not 30.48 square metres. The latter mistakenly applies a length factor.

Convert individual dimensions: use the Length Converter.

Convert cubic quantities: use the Volume Converter.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Do not confuse square metres with metres.
  • Check regional land-unit definitions.
  • Use the correct source measurement.
  • Keep contractual rounding requirements separate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert local land units?

Only the listed units are supported. Regional units can vary and need an explicit definition.

Does the tool measure a plot from a map?

No. It converts an area you already know.

Can I convert cubic metres here?

No. Cubic units measure volume and belong in the volume tool.
