Find and Replace: A Practical Guide

Use Find and Replace to replace every exact occurrence of a supplied string. The replacement can be empty when you want to remove that literal text. This is a case-sensitive literal operation, not a regular-expression editor.

How to Use Find and Replace

  1. Paste the source text.
  2. Enter the exact text to Find.
  3. Enter Replace with, or leave it empty for removal.
  4. Select Replace and inspect the changed passages.

Literal Matching Can Affect Substrings

The implementation splits on the exact search string and joins with the replacement. It does not restrict matching to complete words. A short search can therefore alter text inside longer words.

Because the operation is case-sensitive, Cat and cat are different. Regular-expression punctuation is treated literally rather than as a pattern. Keep an original copy when applying many replacements.

Worked Example

Replacing cat with dog also changes the cat portion of concatenate if that exact sequence occurs. Use a more specific search and inspect surrounding text.

Replacing a project’s exact old name can be useful, but verify headings, URLs and code separately because their requirements may differ.

Normalize case separately when appropriate: use the Case Converter.

Clean spacing afterward: use the Remove Extra Spaces.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Do not leave Find empty.
  • Check substring matches.
  • Do not expect regex syntax.
  • Review code and identifiers carefully.
