Flip Image: A Practical Guide

Use Flip Image to mirror a picture horizontally or vertically. A horizontal flip exchanges left and right; a vertical flip exchanges top and bottom. This is different from rotating the image.

How to Use Flip Image

  1. Select the image.
  2. Choose the horizontal or vertical flip option.
  3. Inspect the mirrored preview.
  4. Apply and download the copy.

Mirroring Can Change Meaning

A flip preserves the general pixel dimensions but reverses spatial relationships. Text, logos, maps and directional signs can become incorrect even when the image looks visually balanced.

Use mirroring deliberately for composition, not as an automatic correction for every photograph. A selfie preview may be mirrored while the original file is not, so compare the saved output.

Worked Example

A product facing left can be mirrored to face right in a layout. If the product carries a readable label, that label will also be reversed.

For a scanned document, rotation is normally the appropriate correction for orientation; flipping can make all the writing backward.

Turn a sideways picture: use the Rotate Image.

Combine supported edits: use the Image Editor.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Check writing and logos.
  • Do not confuse vertical flipping with a 180-degree turn.
  • Inspect identifying marks.
  • Keep the unmirrored original.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does flipping change left and right in the actual file?

Yes. Inspect the downloaded copy rather than relying only on a camera or editor preview.

Can I undo it?

Applying the same flip again can restore orientation, but repeated lossy exports may still change quality.

Can I batch different directions?

Apply only the controls the current selection supports and check each result; mixed requirements may need separate runs.
