FD Calculator: A Practical Guide
Use the FD Calculator to estimate a fixed-deposit style maturity value from a single principal, annual rate, term and compounding frequency. It shows gross interest before deductions. Enter the terms of the deposit you are comparing rather than assuming a default bank policy.
How to Use FD Calculator
- Enter the deposit Principal.
- Enter Annual interest (%) and Time (years).
- Enter the number of compounding periods per year.
- Select Calculate maturity and compare interest with principal.
Maturity Assumptions
Maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ m)^(m × t), where r is the annual decimal rate. The calculation treats interest as reinvested and the rate as constant.
A payout deposit that sends interest to another account behaves differently. Bank-specific rules for partial periods, premature withdrawal, taxes and renewal are not modeled here. Use the bank’s official maturity schedule for the exact contractual amount.
Worked Example
A deposit of 20000 at 5% with annual compounding for two years grows to 22050. Gross interest is 2050.
Changing compounding to four times a year changes the assumed timing of reinvestment. It does not change the annual rate field into a quarterly rate.

Estimate repeated monthly deposits: use the RD Calculator.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Quarterly compounding means enter 4, not 3.
- Do not confuse maturity value with interest earned.
- Do not use a reinvestment model for a periodic interest payout without checking its terms.
- An estimate is not a current deposit-rate quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the calculator subtract tax?
No. It reports gross modeled interest. Tax treatment depends on the applicable rules and your circumstances.
Does it calculate early-closure penalties?
No. Entering a shorter duration does not reproduce a bank’s premature-withdrawal rate or penalty policy.
Can I use months?
Convert the term to years, such as 18 months ÷ 12 = 1.5 years, then check whether partial-period compounding matches the deposit terms.
