Copy PDF: A Practical Guide
Use Copy PDF to create a separate working PDF before performing other operations. A working copy helps keep the source identifiable. For a byte-for-byte archival duplicate, use your device’s file-copy function rather than assuming a PDF-processing tool preserves identical bytes.
How to Use Copy PDF
- Choose the source PDF.
- Run Copy PDF.
- Download with a clear new filename.
- Open the copy and confirm page count and visible content.
A Working Copy Versus an Exact Duplicate
A PDF writer may reserialize document structures even when page appearance is unchanged. This can alter metadata, identifiers or signature validity. A visually identical file is not necessarily a byte-identical file.
Use a naming convention such as source-original.pdf and source-working.pdf. Keeping both files in the same folder with indistinguishable names makes later verification harder.
Worked Example
Before testing a watermark on a report, create a working version and keep the original separately. Apply the watermark only to the working path.
If a signed PDF must remain cryptographically unchanged, make an ordinary file-system copy and verify it with an appropriate checksum or signature tool.
Experiment on a working copy: use the Add Watermark.
Add supported visible content: use the Edit PDF.
Checks and Common Mistakes
- Do not overwrite the source filename accidentally.
- Do not claim an exact clone without byte comparison.
- Check signed documents separately.
- Keep sensitive copies under the same access rules as the original.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does copying remove passwords?
Copying is not the dedicated password-removal workflow.
Does it reduce file size?
A rewrite may change size, but size reduction is not the purpose or a guaranteed result.
Is it a backup strategy?
One extra copy in the same place is not a complete backup plan. Store important originals appropriately.
