Redact PDF: A Practical Guide

Use Redact PDF to black out a selected visible area in a rebuilt PDF. The current workflow rasterizes pages, so text selection and interactive elements may be lost. Redaction requires checking the downloaded output, not only trusting the black rectangle in a preview.

How to Use Redact PDF

  1. Choose the PDF and target page.
  2. Drag over the entire sensitive area, including all characters.
  3. Run Redact PDF.
  4. Open the downloaded copy, inspect the mask and test search or copying for the removed text.

Rasterized Redaction and Its Tradeoffs

The implementation renders pages into images and paints the selected region black before building a new PDF. That differs from placing a removable annotation over the original text.

All pages in the output may become image-based. Links, form fields, selectable text and signature validation can be affected. The visible-region workflow is not a complete document-sanitization audit: check other pages, repeated information, filenames and any additional material before disclosure.

Worked Example

If an identification number appears in the header and again in a table, masking the header alone is insufficient. Find and address both appearances.

Select slightly beyond the character edges so no part of the first or last digit remains visible. Then inspect the actual downloaded page at high zoom.

Inspect a page as an image: use the PDF to JPG.

Remove an entire unnecessary sensitive page: use the Remove PDF Pages.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Keep the original in a secure location.
  • Do not use a watermark or white box as a substitute.
  • Check every occurrence of the sensitive information.
  • Verify the recipient can accept an image-based output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the remaining text stay selectable?

This workflow rasterizes the pages, so text selection may be lost. OCR afterward would create new recognized text and must be checked again.

Can one selection remove repeated information everywhere?

No. The selected page and region define the visible operation. Review other occurrences separately.

Is the result automatically cleared for public release?

No. A person still needs to review the full output and its context before sharing.
