Stopwatch: A Practical Guide

Use Stopwatch to measure a casual elapsed interval in the current browser page. Start begins timing, Stop pauses it and Reset clears it. The display shows minutes, seconds and tenths rather than a calendar date-time.

How to Use Stopwatch

  1. Select Start.
  2. Select Stop when the interval ends.
  3. Select Start again to continue the accumulated interval.
  4. Select Reset before measuring an unrelated event.

Elapsed Time and Display Updates

The implementation uses a monotonic browser performance clock for elapsed time while active, with periodic display updates. A slow redraw does not necessarily mean the same amount of timing error.

Device sleep, page suspension and browser behavior can still limit reliability. The current interface does not provide lap recording, an export log or persistence after leaving the page. Use appropriate equipment for formal timing.

Worked Example

Time a short reading exercise, stop at the end, then record the displayed interval. Reset before the next independent attempt.

If you pause and resume intentionally, the accumulated result represents the running periods rather than all wall time between the first start and final stop.

Count down from a chosen duration: use the Countdown Timer.

Convert the recorded duration: use the Time Converter.

Checks and Common Mistakes

  • Do not refresh during a measurement.
  • Record results before leaving.
  • Do not assume formal sports certification.
  • Use Reset deliberately because it clears the accumulated value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Stop reset the reading?

No. It pauses and retains the accumulated elapsed time.

Can I record laps?

The current form has Start, Stop and Reset, without a dedicated lap table.

Will it survive closing the tab?

Do not assume the state persists. Record the result before leaving.
